A 2008 study has found that a gene variant in Androgen receptors may lead to a predisposition towards violent behavior in men.
Singh Rajender and colleagues took blood samples from 241 convicted rapists, 107 murderers, and 26 men convicted of both crimes. The blood samples from this group was then compared to a control group.
It was found that murderers and rapists had significantly shorter CAG repeats in the AR gene (translation into English: they have lower Androgen levels) than control subjects. Subjects convicted of both rape and murder had far shorter repeats in comparison to either controls or men who committed only one of these crimes. The researchers concluded that there is a genetic component to extremely violent behaviors such as rape and murder.
“Reduced CAG repeats length in androgen receptor gene is associated with violent criminal behavior,” Singh Rajender, Guguluth Pandu, J. D. Sharma, K. P. C. Gandhi, Lalji Singh, and Kumarasamy Thangaraj, International Journal of Legal Medicine, March 26, 2008
