Emo Phillips had one of my favorite lines of all time "I used to think the brain was the most fascinating thing in the world - until I realized what was telling me that". I think its a hilarious line (us psychologists aren't exactly known for having killer senses of humor) but also brilliant because it raises a very important point - unless we are take conscious charge of our brains they will run the show for us.
Nowhere is this more true than in anger management. Whenever I first bring up the importance of understanding how your brain contributes to an anger problem people's eyes either instantly glaze over or get a panicked look in them. However, once I've gone through the basics and explain how anger is a normal reaction that can be controlled if we use our brains the right way, the reactions I get from most people are a combination of not feeling crazy and a sense that maybe they really can control their anger if they learn a few basic tricks.
