Tiger Woods and Charlie Sheen are just the latest of countless celebrities and athletes who have had domestic violence surface in a very public way in their marriage. Its interesting how some people, like Charlie Sheen for example, can reportedly do something horrific as holding a knife to his wife's throat and be instantly forgiven while others, such as Jackson Browne who was accused of beating Daryl Hannah many years ago, have it become one of the first things that come to people's minds when his name comes up (I was watching the 25th Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Concert and when JB came out three people in the room with me spontaneously said "oh, the wife beater").
I think that part of the difference in the public's reaction to Sheen vs. Browne as an example may be in part because Sheen in essence has come forward and owned up to it and also has an image as a bad boy who has a good heart whereas Browne denied the charges and tries to portray a squeaky clean image. Another example happened right here in Washington DC this week as Gilbert Arenas was accused of bringing guns into the locker room and reportedly threatening a fellow teammate. Instead of taking any responsibility for it, he made a joke out of it by pretending to shoot his teammates in a huddle last night. End result was him being suspended today for an indefinite period and being generally ripped to shreds by the local fans.
End lesson is that acknowledging you have an anger management problem and trying to do something about actually earns you more respect and forgiveness than denying or minimizing it.
