Your own dog gets scared and hides under the bed when you raise your voice when your happy because she is so freaked by you yelling when you are mad. That was my final wake up call in realizing I had an anger management problem.
Before that I didn't really think I had an anger management issue. Oh sure, I'd get cheesed and yell every now and then but who doesn't, right? Well, it turns out anger is a bit like an addiction in that there are all sorts of lies that you tell yourself to convince yourself that you don't really have a problem.
The seven I've seen most often are:
1) Venting decreases anger.
2) Strong anger is necessary to get people to listen
3)If you don't get angry you must not care.
4) People who get me mad deserve what they have coming to them.
5) Not getting angry means I think the other person is right or is getting away with something.
6)You don't understand the problems I have to deal with.
7)Depression is anger turned inward.
I've written an article in the
Library that goes into these lies in more detail. You can read it
here.
